In typography, the counter is the white space that is entirely enclosed in some letter forms. The first example is the capital "A."  The strong contrast between the counter and the letter surrounding it can generate interesting effects by using different color schemes and  adjusting the light and shade relationships. The second example is a double-story "g." Two counters, specifically called loops, are on each side of baseline. They are connected by a link, creating an elegant curvy shape.
